The Empty Space-The Philosophy of ITC
As a relatively young theatre company there is a questions we tend to ask ourselves when faced with personal beliefs of our patrons and audience. These beliefs
can range anywhere from religious to rational, irrational to philosophical. The question we ask ourselves, and perhaps the most important, is why do we do what
we do? During the inception of Insomniak it was easy to discuss the philosophy that would create the backbone of this company but as time goes on we tend to focus
less on philosophy and more on practicality. No matter the circumstance we tend to agree on truthfulness in our art. Our hope is that our audience views our
productions in the same fashion. As we move forward we find that there are those who do not agree with our selections, mainly the content and subject matter
pertaining to those selections. In essence, censorship. For a team of artists this word often brings out feelings of resent and a sense of misunderstanding.
How is it that the artist can be truthful without access to all of mankinds idiosyncrasies and experiences? He must however strive to bring forth the messages he
is trying to convey. Peter Brook, renowned director and author, states in his book The Empty Space that drama was exposure, it was confrontation, it was
contradiction and it led to analysis, involvement, recognition and, eventually, to an awakening of understanding. Despite Brooks implications that this theatre
no longer exists Insomniak strives to make this our mission and our credo. We feel that this more than sums up what theatre strives to do, and as we all know the
truth is not always pretty.
