THE LITTLE BLACK BOX THEATRE
HIstory
The Little Black Box Theatre began during the Summer of 2007. Co-founder
of Insomniak, Erik Honsel, has been making plans to convert his garage
into a small black box theatre which doubles as rehearsal/office space for
Insomniak.The theatrealso stores much of Insomniaks costume supplies.
The goal of the LBB is to provide educational and workshop settings for
children and adults who are interested in the arts. Last summer,kids
who participated in the LBB theatre program were able to perform during
ITC’s Greek Theatre Festival and some in ITC’s staging of Oedipus.
This summer LBB is providing three two week long sessions for Theatrical
and Musical studies. Below is a list of the classes and programs we are
offering this summer.

Session 1: June 23- July 4; Session 2: July 7-18; Session 3: July 21-Aug 1
Classes meet Monday-Friday at the Little Black Box, Nazareth, PA
The Power of Play - ages 6-8. Students will learn acting and storytelling
by reading stories and working together to act out dramatically. Dramatic
elements such as imagination, movement, pantomime, mask making and puppetry
will be explored.
*Sessions 1, 2, 3, Play Building ages 9-12. Students are introduced
to techniques actors use on the stage. They will study basic dramatic training
in movement, pantomime, improvisation, voice & speech. Students will work
with scripts they create as well as scenes from plays.
*Sessions 1, 2, 3 All the Worlds a Stage ages 13-15. Students use
theirbodies, voices and minds to create characters, play intentions and work
together to create new pieces of theatre. Students will experience scene
analysis, blocking a set and character development. Students will also work
with scripts they create as well as scenes from plays.
*Sessions 1 and 2 Acting Awareness Training ages 16-adult. This intensive
drama class will examine the diverse theories of acting from Stanislavski
System and Sanford-Meisner Approach to what universities and professional
acting studios are doing today.Individually designed instruction in
monologues, scene work and auditioning skills will be a part of this class.
*Scheduling determined by student needs Rhythm and Pitch ages 12-14.
Students will be introduced to the most basic elements of music, rhythm
and pitch using techniques developed by Jacques-Dalcroze involving eyes,
ears, mind and body to gain a full understanding of how music relates to
movement and performance.Compositional and performance
exercises will also be utilized.
*Sessions 1, 2, 3 Traditional Music Studies ages 15-17.Students
will study elements of classicaland romantic harmony through listening and
performance exercises and current music and how classical music has influenced
their favorite bands. Students will have the opportunity to see a live
classical performance and meet with musicians and composers.
*Sessions 1, 2, 3 Advanced Harmony and Improv ages 18-adult. Focus
will be on harmonic studies in classical contemporary music, jazz and
funk studying artists such as Schoenberg, Copeland, Mehldau, Monk and
more. Improvisational study of contemporary and jazz using Jacques-Dalcroze
techniques as well as an emphasis on developing musicthrough movement.
*Sessions 1, 2, 3cPrivate Instruction in Piano, Voice or Composition –
all ages welcome Meet the Educators: As part of Insomniaks educational
outreach program,Production Manager,Erik Honseland Artistic Director,
Matthew Meckes will lead summer instruction. Erik will teach the
acting classes and Matthew will teach the music and composition classes.
Erik has been teaching acting and theatre for over
a decade and performing for even longer. He holds a theatre degree from
DeSales University and has also studied with the Creative Arts Team at NYU
and The New Actors Workshop, NYC. He is presentlya performing arts educator
at NAHS. Matthew has been a student of music for 13 years and currently is
completing his degree at Berklee College of Music as a composition major.He has
excelled in piano, voice and composition and is also a recording artist with his
first album released and two more in the works.
*All students will have an opportunity to perform at the conclusion
